The Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization established a Sheep Biology Laboratory at Prospect in 1953. In 1959 the Laboratory became the Division of Animal Physiology, with the Ian Clunies Ross Research Laboratory being set up as the headquarters of the Division. In 1975 the Prospect establishment was restructured and became the Division of Animal Production, which researched and developed areas of animal production and biotechnology. Another restructure occurred in July 2000, when amalgamating the Divisions of Animal Production and Animal Health formed the Division of Livestock Industries. That same year the CSIRO decided to relocate all research activities on animal production that were being conducted at Prospect to other Livestock Industries sites in Armidale, Rockhampton, Geelong, Brisbane and Baker’s Hill. The Prospect site was vacated in January 2002 and the land is now being developed for housing and light industry.
