Rev. George Middleton was Rector of St Bartholomew’s from 1891 to 1905.
He was born in Australia, the eldest son of Rev. James Middleton, of Bellevue Hill.
Rev. Middleton was ordained on 7 July, 1867 and was Priested in 1869 by Bishop Barker.
His first appointment was to St Paul’s at Cobbitty.
Before coming to the St Bartholomew’s in 1891, Rev Middleton held an appointment at Emu Plains and Castlereagh.
After leaving the parish of Prospect with Seven Hills in 1905, he worked at St. Peter’s, Cooks River, where he was the third Moore College graduate to have been appointed there. He stayed at St Peter’s until his retirement in 1914.
Rev. Middleton married Catherine Blake Smith in 1870.
They had six children;
Ruby born 1872, died 1873,
Lillian Myra born 1873, died 1875,
Frederick George Edward Latimer was born on 13th October 1875, and baptised at St Bartholomew’s on 21st January 1876 by Rev .E. Smith, At this time the Middleton family was living at Kurrajong. Frederick died in 1949.
Norman Patterson born 1877, died 24 October 1900, buried at St Bartholomew’s
Duncan Selwyn born 1881, died 1941.
There was one other child whose name is not known, born in 1870
Rev Middleton died on 7 September, 1915 and is buried in St Bartholomew’s Cemetery, section 3, plot 66, row 3, grave 1.
His headstone transcription reads:
In Loving Memory
Of
Revd GEORGE MIDDLETON
Born 20th March 1844
Died 7th Sep. 1915,
Aged 71 years.
Only believe & thou shall see
that Christ is all in all to thee.
Also buried there are;
his wife, ‘Katie’ Blake, who died on 29 October 1894,
his mother, Sarah, who died on 11 September 1896
